A deep expression of the whisky making tradition—and unique, smoky sweet flavour—we’ve been refining in Orkney for more than two hundred years.  Ripe black cherries, dark chocolate and a hint of crushed oregano on the nose, followed by warm fruit and spice on the palate, from sweet, dried apricots to stem ginger and cloves, with intriguing hints of fresh eucalyptus and mint leaves. A spicy and complex finish, with lingering notes of cloves and mint, wrapped in fragrant smoke from our Orkney heathered peat.

Description

Rich, complex and spicy, with a distinctively fruity character, Highland Park 40 was crafted from just five refill sherry seasoned hogsheads, originally laid down 1981 and 1982 and matured for an extended period of time in Warehouse 8 (dunnage), Warehouse 24 (racked) and Warehouse 25 (racked). Its four decades of maturation have given it an exceptional smoothness and subtlety, as well as natural deep russet colour direct from the cask.








A Rare Expression

Matured for nearly 40 years in five, hand-selected refill sherry-seasoned European oak hogsheads, chosen for their soft and balanced dark fruit and spice notes, before being tipped into first-fill sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks for seven months to intensify the flavours of warm spice and sweet vanilla. 

Over many generations, our whisky makers have worked tirelessly to identify casks with intense, distinctive flavours to lay down in our warehouses for the future. These special casks are what today’s master whisky makers draw upon for our rare aged whiskies, crafting these limited releases with a combination of instinct, creative flair and passion for the task at hand.
